C o m e and join the first plein air painting event in Cheltenham, this 2020, with prizes to be won

The French term plein air means outside and refers to the practice of painting entire finished pictures out of doors. Watch This Space are delighted to announce the first event of this kind in Cheltenham.

Come for the day, paint and enjoy the beautiful gardens in Montpellier, Cheltenham and get your work judged by experts in their field plus a chance to win some amazing prizes.

How does it work?

Arrive at the gardens, having pre-registered, with your blank canvas to be stamped on the back and your materials ready to paint. (14-18 years come for FREE) Go and spend the day creating your artwork within a 1 mile radius of the beautiful gardens. Come back to Gardens Gallery by 4pm for judging. The Prize-giving will be at 5 – 6pm

Selected pieces from the day, will be on display, and for sale, for the following week at Gardens Gallery. 12 – 16 July, 10-5pm daily. Please specify on the day when getting your work stamped, if you would like to be included in the post exhibition selection. All work will be for sale, with a 30% commission taken on any sales made.

Our Judges for Montpellier Gardens:

  • PJ Crook, MBE RWA FRSA, an internationally acclaimed artist and Patron of Cheltenham Open Studios, one of the founding art clubs of The Gardens Gallery
  • Jaynie Tricker, artist, arts educator and prize winning en plein air specialist painter

Important Information:

  • You must start and finish your artwork on the day
  • Original artwork can be in any medium & any size
  • iPad and photography artwork does not qualify
  • We accept no responsibility for loss, damage or injury during the day
  • Any work bought back after 4pm, will not be eligible for judging.

  • How do we register and How much is registration:

Visit : www. gardensgallery.co.uk, click on the link which will take you through to registration. Registration is £15 per person.

  • Are there ID or minimum age requirements to enter the event? The competition is open to anyone aged 14 years of age and over. 14 – 18 year olds are able to paint for FREE, they are not required to register and pay the registration fee. There is a specific youth prize for under 18’s as well as the opportunity to have your work judged for the main prizes. 14 – 18 year olds, please bring ID with you on event day.
  • What are my transport/parking options for getting to and from the event?

Montpellier Gardens is situated in the centre of Cheltenham, so there are lots of parking options available in the vicinity, including on-road paid parking and pay and display car parks only a 5-10min walk away. The Montpellier Park is only a short 5 min walk from the centre of town where all public buses drop off and pick up. Cheltenham Railway station is a 20 min walk or a 5min taxi ride away.

  • What can I bring into the event?

All you need to bring is your blank canvas and all materials ready to paint for the day, including an easel and a chair if you wish. No materials are supplied. Please note that your canvas will need to be stamped on the back upon arrival to qualify for the judging process at the end of the day. You will also need to provide your own refreshments for the day. There are a variety of cafes in and around Montpellier Park.

  • How can I contact the organiser with any questions?

  • What’s the refund policy?

Refunds are available up to 30 days before the event, however you will still be required to pay the booking fee (£2). Sadly we are unable to refund any payments within 30 days of the event.

  • Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event?

Yes please. If you’re able to arrive with a print out of your booking confirmation that would help us out immensely on the registration desk.

  • Is my registration fee or ticket transferrable?

If you wish to transfer your booking to another name and it is not within 30 days of the event, then please do email through the details to hello@wts.space and we will endeavour to transfer the details for you. We will not be able to make these changes within 30days of the event and certainly not on the day .

MONTPELLIER GARDENS

The Gardens were originally developed in the early 1800's and its centrepiece is the Bandstand.

Facing the Bandstand is the Proscenium Building where we now have our Gallery.

ACCESS

  1. There is wheelchair access to the gallery from the path between the tennis courts and the gallery.
  2. For exhibitors delivering their work, there is a locked bollard to be removed at the gardens entrance. See link below for details.
  3. Unfortunately, there is no disabled parking in the gardens.
  4. Exhibitors should take care to design their exhibition layout with wheelchair use in mind.

If we take out the impact of Festivals then the weekly average is 400 per week.
