Event Details

Exploring Colour brings together three Gloucestershire artists working in contrasting styles and media who share a love for exploring the relationships between colours. With abstract art from Gerald Crittle, contemporary paintings from Martyn Dymott and fused glass from Debbie Smith, there is something for everyone in this exhibition. This will be Martyn and Debbie’s first exhibition at the Gardens Gallery, bringing something new for regular visitors to enjoy. Contemporary artist Martyn Dymott enjoys painting en plein air to capture the effects of natural light. He also draws on the relationship between primary and secondary colours in creating his vivid landscapes and street scenes. His favourite places to paint include both the South West and Italy, where he is a frequent visitor. Martyn will also be showing some of his portrait paintings, which again are not shy in exploring the theory of colour. In 2013 his portrait ‘Evidence of Life’ won the President’s Cup at the Gloucestershire Society of Artists’ summer exhibition. Martyn’s portraits often feature his artistic heroes from the late 19 th and early 20 th century who have influenced the development of modern art styles and movements, such as Amedeo Modigliani. He is an established artist and has shown his work at exhibitions across Gloucestershire for many years. More information Abstract artist Gerald Crittle creates large, vibrant paintings in mixed media, using both colour and texture to produce dramatic impact. He enjoys experimenting with different materials to create unique paintings and wall objects. Gerald’s paintings develop organically. He begins by applying texture and layers of paint and from this process shapes appear that become the focus of the work and determine the final colours. For this exhibition he has created a new series of large paintings, each appearing to represent a distant galaxy or somewhere far away. This show will also include new works in the ‘New Life’ series. These are painted on old gnarled wooden boards to create unusual shapes and patterns. Not everything on show will be large scale as Gerald will also be exhibiting some smaller abstract paintings and a collection of wall objects. He is a member of the Gloucester Society of Artists and exhibits regularly across the county. More information Fused glass artist Debbie Smith uses colour to create eye-catching glass pieces which are both striking and functional. She began working in glass as a creative outlet from her day job and quickly became transfixed by the range of colours and the varied ways glass transmits and reflects light when it is combined in different ways. She particularly enjoys using bright colours, with deep reds and oranges being particular favourites, whether contrasted with complementary colours or combined with black or white. Debbie also turned to embroidery patterns for inspiration and has created a series of delicate floral panels and bowls which contrast with her more vivid work. She is continually trying out new techniques, working with other local glass artists to explore the possibilities of this versatile and tactile material.
