This exhibition gives the opportunity for Vivien and Michelle Townsend, mother and daughter, to present their own creative practices. Both hugely influenced by light and the natural environment they have enjoyed bringing together their differing approaches and techniques, here at The Garden Gallery in this joint collection.
Vivien is an award winning artist and also an experienced tutor who is inspired by colour, light and atmosphere in the landscape. She aims to capture a sense of time, place and mood. Living in Devon and Cornwall for some years the atmosphere of the coast , moors and misty estuaries inspired Vivien to paint in watercolour. After moving to Gloucester she is now well known for painting Gloucester Docks. In 2016 she received the main prize for the Gloucester Art in the City en plein air Competition for her painting 'Here Today' of The Docks.  Local waterways, towns, villages, Cotswold countryside and coastal scenes feature strongly in her work.

Michelle showcases work chosen from collections that she has produced over the last 6 years. Light, surface and the play of pattern on material link the work and express the journey, projects and pieces she has developed during that time.
Her passion lies within pattern, materials and technology. She uses light and the relationship light has with materials and process as a continuous source of creative exploration. The display features laser cut creations in acrylics and wood, enamelled copper, also cast glass studies designed in virtual reality software.
Michelle works in education, teaching at UWE Bristol within the Digital Fabrication department. She is passionate about learning and the sharing of knowledge and experience. She has also been a freelance designer, since graduating in 2009, taking part in many projects, commissions, installations, talks and exhibitions.
